New CIO appointments, March 2021

IBM announces Kathryn Guarini as CIO

Guarini is replacing Fletcher Previn who has held the CIO role since spring of 2017 and is leaving to pursue other opportunities, according to a statement by CFO, Jim Kavanaugh. Most recently, Guarini held the roles of Chief Operations Officer and Vice President of Impact Science at IBM Research. Guarini and Previn are working together over the coming weeks to ensure a smooth transition, according to a statement by Kavanaugh. In hew new role, Guarini will lead a team of over 12,000 technology employees who are responsible for IT systems and infrastructure used by more than 350,000 IBM team members globally. She first joined IBM in 1999 and has held various technical, management, and executive positions throughout her tenure. Guarini earned a BS in Applied Physics from Yale University, and a Ph.D. in Applied Physics from Stanford University.​

Marta Zarraga Joins Capital Group as Chief Information Officer

Capital Group, home of American Funds, is one of the world’s largest investment management firms, managing more than $2.3 trillion in equity and fixed income assets for millions of individual and institutional investors around the world. Zarraga has 25 years of industry experience and previously served as global Chief Information Officer for Aviva. She also served as Chief Information Officer at Vodafone and British Telecom. She holds a master’s degree in computer engineering from Universidad de Deusto in Spain.

Ryan Olivier promoted to VP and CIO at Meritor

Olivier began his career with the $4B auto parts manufacturer in 2001 and has held various roles with increasing responsibilities in Purchasing, Supply Chain and Information Systems. He has a BS degree in Logistics, Materials and Supply Chain Management from Michigan State University and an MBA from Oakland University, Rochester Hills, MI.

Echo Global Logistics announces Brian Parchem as Chief Information Officer

Headquartered in Chicago, with more than 30 offices around the country, Echo Global Logistics is a Fortune 1000 provider of technology-enabled transportation and supply chain management services. Prior to joining Echo, Parchem was Executive Vice President of Global Engineering and Operations at TransUnion. Earlier he spent over 15 years in technology at HSBC. He holds a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Northern Illinois University.

Brown & Brown promotes Gray Nester to CIO position

Wynn Resorts promotes Jason Stump to SVP & CIO, North America

Globally, Wynn Resorts is a $6.7B company that owns and operates Wynn and Encore Las Vegas, Encore Boston Harbor, Wynn Macau, and Wynn Palace, Cotai. Stump had served as CIO of Encore Boston Harbor for two years, and had been performing the interim CIO role for Wynn Resorts North America since last August. He has held previous CIO positions in the industry and has 28 years of gaming experience. He was the Tech Exec Las Vegas CIO of the Year in 2018 and most recently, a 2020 CIO of the Year Finalist in Boston.

Navient promotes Mike Maier to Chief Information Officer post

Maier first joined the $5.5B education loan management and business processing solutions company in 2015 as Senior Vice President, Strategic Initiatives. Prior to Navient, he spent several years in loan operations leadership roles at Sallie Mae. Maier is a graduate of the United States Naval Academy where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering. He is a trustee of the Naval Academy Athletic and Scholarship Foundation.

Gunjan Goel named chief information officer of ST Engineering North America

He holds a Master’s of Science in Information Systems from Arizona State University and an Executive MBA from Notre Dame. He is a Six Sigma Blackbelt.

MaineHealth appoints Daniel J. Nigrin, MD, to CIO post

Most recently, Nigrin served as SVP and Chief Information Officer at Boston Children’s Hospital, an institution he first joined in 1995 as an attending physician specializing in pediatric endocrinology, he was drawn to the role that technology plays in delivering high-quality care. Nigrin began to assume increasing responsibility within Boston Children’s IT department and in 1999 obtained a master’s degree in Medical Informatics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He completed his medical residency at Johns Hopkins University Medical School.

North Memorial Health names Bradford Newton CIO

Most recently, Newton was with Wellstar Health System in Atlanta, Georgia, in the role of vice president of information technology administration and enterprise applications. He earned a BA in Economics from Duke University and an MBA from the University of North Carolina.

Humana elects Marcy S. Klevorn to board of directors

Klevorn was formerly the Chief Transformation Officer of Ford Motor Company from May 2019 until her retirement in October 2019. Her 36-year career with Ford spanned a variety of executive and leadership roles including Chief Information Officer and Executive Vice President and President of Ford Smart Mobility LLC. Humana Inc. is a $65B managed health care company that markets and administers health insurance services for employer groups, individuals, and government-sponsored programs. Humana is headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky.

SymphonyRM appoints veteran healthcare CIO Marc Probst to its board of directors

Bruce Hoffmeister joins Cracker Barrel as CIO

Hoffmeister is responsible for all aspects of information technology, security and digital strategies and initiatives for the $3.1B chain that combines a retail store and a restaurant. Previously, Hoffmeister worked at Marriott International for more than 30 years where he served in a number of finance and technology executive roles including his most recent role as Global Chief Information Officer. He holds degrees in mathematics and biology from Thomas More College and earned an MBA from Vanderbilt University’s Owen Graduate School of Management.

Keith Jones appointed as the U.S. Department of State’s Chief Information Officer.

Jones has previously spent more than 36 years in the federal government, having retired from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) in October 2018, where he served as acting Chief Information Officer and Principal Deputy Chief Information Officer. At USCIS, he was responsible for the oversight and management of agency-wide CIO initiatives with the annual execution of an $800 million budget for service delivery to over 20,000 internal customers. He earned an MPS in Public Administration from American University.

Tom Peck Joins Sysco as Chief Information and Digital Officer

Peck will lead efforts to accelerate business transformation through customer-facing technology solutions at the $52B global foodservice distribution company, and will lead modernization of its technology infrastructure. He most recently served as chief information and digital officer of Ingram Micro Inc., an approximately $50 billion global leader in technology distribution, supply chain services and cloud solutions. Peck began his career as an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps after graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy.

Nordson appoints Ishmael Cooper to CIO position

Headquartered outside Cleveland, OH, with operations in 30 countries, Nordson (NASDAQ: NDSN, $2.2B) engineers and manufactures products for industrial use in a variety of markets including energy, medical, construction, and transportation. Ishmael (Ish) Cooper brings over 20 years of business technology leadership experience to his new role at Nordson. Most recently, Cooper was VP & CIO for Livanova, a $1B medical device maker. He holds a BBA in Management Information Systems from University of Houston, and an MBA from University of Texas.

PPG Appoints Bhaskar Ramachandran, Vice President and Chief Information Officer

Ramachandran will succeed Chris Caruso, who has announced that he will retire in March from $15B Pittsburgh-based paints, coatings and specialty materials company. Ramachandran joins PPG from Jabil Inc., an American worldwide manufacturing services company, where he served as vice president, IT, and CIO of the company’s largest division. He earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Madras University in Chennai, India, an advanced diploma in information systems from the National Institute of IT in India, and an MBA from Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business.

Mark Chequer is the new CIO at GeoVera Holdings

Chequer is an experienced CIO and CTO who brings many years of information security and data architecture expertise to GeoVera. Most recently, he was CIO of CSE Insurance. He will report to the CEO of GeoVera, John Forney.

Rafael Sanchez joins Six Flags as Chief Information Officer

Founded in 1961 and headquartered in Arlington, TX, Six Flags ($1.5B) owns and operates theme parks. Previously, Sanchez served as CIO of Feld entertainment. His earlier CIO roles include Brightstar, Carnival Corporation, and Diageo. He earned a BS degree in business administration from Louisiana State University.

Stan Waddell promoted to CIO at Carnegie Mellon University

Waddell has been promoted to Vice President for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer from his role as Associate Vice President for Computing Services at the Pittsburgh-based university. He had been reporting to CMU President Farnam Jahanian as the interim CIO since last spring. Previously, Waddell served as CIO at the University of New Hampshire. He earned a BS degree in Electrical Engineering from Old Dominion University, an MS in Information Systems Management from University of Texas, and a Ph.D. in Information Systems from Nova Southeastern University. Waddell also served in the U.S. Navy as an aviation electronics technician for nine years.

JetBlue Appoints Monte Ford to Board of Directors

Ford joins JetBlue's board with technology expertise gained from a career spanning almost four decades. In a previous role, he served as senior vice president and chief information officer of American Airlines. He is currently the principal partner at the CIO Strategy Exchange, an organization of the top 50 sitting Chief Information Officers in business.

Foot Locker Appoints Himanshu Parikh as SVP & CIO

Parikh will oversee the execution of the next generation of Foot Locker's strategic technology agenda in support of the sneaker retailer's key strategic imperatives and future capability-building and innovation. Foot Locker is based in New York and has approximately 3,000 retail stores in 28 countries. Most recently, Parikh served as SVP, Chief Technology Officer at The Michaels Companies. Earlier, held several executive roles with Ross Stores. Parikh holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from M.S. University, Vadodara, India.

Hillrom has welcomed Sven Krause as Chief Information Officer
