CIO Digital Roundtable: How to embrace the hybrid workplace of the future

We live in a time of intense and continual transformation. To survive, companies need to be at the leading edge of change, embracing the unpredictable with agility and resilience.

The current pandemic proves how unprepared companies were for change and disruption. This “wake-up call” has seen many companies, big and small, accelerating their future of work strategies for business continuity, or simply, for survival.

As such, for many CIOs, this is a growing priority. In IDG’s 2019 Workplace of The Future study, 72% of IT leaders said developing a workplace of the future for their organisation is ‘extremely or very important’, with 85% seeing improved employee productivity or morale as the biggest benefit of such a project. However, at the same time, many did also note concerns around legacy IT infrastructure, skills and culture – and this was before a pandemic accelerated many of these digital workplace plans.

As it stands today, the CIO must play a key role in getting past such challenges, especially in working hand-in-hand with other business peers. “The CIO needs to be a facilitator for the workplace of the future,” says Sean Harley, CIO at media company Ascential. “I say this as it’s not just about technology. HR has a big part to play in the cultural change aspects of a more mobile workforce: understanding what attracts top talent and their working requirements, and, importantly, educating managers to manage outcomes – not necessarily time spent at desk.”

Speaking separately, ServiceNow CIO Chris Bedi agrees. “The CIO is interacting with every C-suite member to figure out how to navigate the ‘next normal’ using technology and workflows.”

Prior to joining ServiceNow, Bedi served as CIO of JDSU from August 2011 to March 2015 where he was responsible for IT, Facilities, and Indirect Procurement. Prior to JDSU, Bedi held various positions at VeriSign from April 2002 until August 2011, including CIO, VP Corporate Development, and VP HR Operations. Bedi began his career at KPMG Consulting from June 1996 to April 2002. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering from the University of Michigan.
